I worked with Lunar & Intel on the Intel Reader, a device that increases independence and enables easier access to printed materials for people with reading-based disabilities such as dyslexia, low vision, or blindness by reading printed text aloud.
From early product concepts and requirements, I worked with the team to flesh out the potential user needs based on the primary end user audiences: school-age users with dyslexia who needed the device for homework, reading assignments, test taking, and other reading; and blind or vision-impaired users who had more day-to-day requirements - reading mail, medication labels, and food packaging.
White board concepting and wire framing, supported by simple prototyping, helped the team explore and understand the basic architecture and core functionality that would form the foundation for the product. Later in the process, high-fidelity static prototypes of interaction flows communicated design decisions to key stakeholders.
Prototypes served as a vital document for communicating design intent to the development team. For a product where the user experience and the accomplishment of certain key goals were absolutely critical, being able to show the development team core interactions was deeply important.
User testing with early builds of the product software proved invaluable for understanding preconceptions and assumptions that people brought to the experience. Feedback was also inspiring and heartwarming - one blind user said during testing that this was a dream-product for them and asked, “Oh my god, can I have this right now?!”
Because the product was intended for users who range from blind to fully sighted, designing an interface that worked for both was a challenge. Providing a streamlined, task-focused experience that was accessible both visually and auditorily was crucial for success. Testing and receiving feedback from our key user groups was a big part of the process.
The design work we did at Lunar turned the vision for the Intel Reader into a reality. Intel successfully completed development and brought the product to market.
